The North West Province of South Africa was created after the 1994 democratic elections from the merger of Bophuthatswana (one of the former Bantustans or black homelands) and the Western parts of the former Transvaal regions. The province is bordered in the North by Botswana, on the south by the Provinces of Free State and the Northern Cape, and in the northeast and east by the Limpopo Province and Gauteng. This province is approximately 116,231 sq km.
The population size of the province is estimated around 3 597 600 and with 63.4% of the population speaking SeTshwana, 9% Afrikaans speaking and 5.5% of IsiXhosa speaking South Africans. The capital city of the province is Mahikeng (formerly Mafikeng) and it lies in the boarder of Mmabatho, Potchefstroom and Klerkdorp. The economy of the province is derived from mining, with Rusternburg and Britz districts producing 94 % of the country’s platinum, gold, granite, marble, fluorspar and diamonds.
The Province is divided into four District Municipalities; Bojanala District Municipality, Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality and Dr Ruth Mompati District Municipality. Other significant towns include Brits, Klerksdorp, Lichtenburg, Potchefstroom, Rustenburg and Sun City.

Social Infrastructure Programmes

Infrastructure Development Sector
North West Department of Education
Purpose of programme is to eradicate inappropriate school structures and build new structures where there is a need. The scope of the programme includes amongst others the building of new schools, addition to facilities to schools involving but not limited to Grade R structures, Full services, fencing and boreholes, school sanitation, additions and major renovations, recapitalization, storm damages schools.
The agreement started 9 July 2014 and will end on the 31st March 2017.

Department of Local Government and Human Settlement
The purpose of this programme is to assess and provide the level of access to basic services in all the municipalities within the province. Contractor Development Programme
This programme was created to train and award CIDB grade 3-5 contractors, putting them on incubation for a period of three years. It also placed grade 1-2 women contractors and their supervisors on an NQF level 3 general building construction learnership for a period of 12 months. The contractors would later be awarded with projects as part of their experiential learning and empowerment.
