IDT spearheads the use of Alternative Construction Methodology in School Building

In response to the backlog for the eradication of Mud Schools and Inappropriate School structures, the IDT proposed the use of Alternative Construction Methodology (ACM).  Previously, the IDT contributed R150 million to the eradication of Mud schools programme. In 2011, the Minister of Public Works appointed the IDT to fast tract the construction of 12 schools using these methodologies.  Ten of these schools are in the Eastern Cape and the other two are in the North West. The ten schools in the Eastern Cape are Nomkolokoto Junior Secondary in Mount Frere, Pakamani Senior Secondary, Gulandoda Senior Primary (in Ngcobo), Willowvale in Willowvale, Nduku Junior Secondary, Hlwahlwazi Junior Secondary, Mgwili Primary, Ntlangano Junior Secondary, Mhleleni Junior Secondary (in Lusikisiki respectively) and Rwantsana Junior Secondary in Ntabankulu.  The two schools in North West are Myra Primary and Setumo Senior Secondary in Taung.

Subsequently, the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development and Department of Education also followed suite and appointed IDT to use the same methodologies for the construction of Grade R classrooms in 163 Gauteng schools and the Olivenhoutbosch and Lotus Gardens Primary schools.

The Alternative Construction Methodologies deliver infrastructure in speedy manner, have lower construction costs, create more jobs, are environmentally sustainable and provide a safe and comfortable learning environment.
