 IDT AND PUBLIC WORKS HOST THE EXPANDED PUBLIC WORKS NON-STATE SECTOR SUMMIT: 2012

In commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the establishment of the Non-State Sector (NSS) which is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), the Minister of Public Works, the Honourable Thulas W Nxesi will deliver the keynote address at the EPWP Non State Sector Summit.

The EPWP Non- State Sector Summit is jointly hosted by the IDT and the National Department of Public Works at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Gauteng on 12 to 13 April 2012.  The purpose of the summit is to:

  • raise awareness about the work undertaken by Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) in partnership with government;
  • establish a partnership with the private sector and other role-players to ensure sustainability; and
  • review the current NSS model and to get views from other stakeholders on how best the model can be improved.

 The IDT was contracted by the Department of Public Works in 2009 for the role of intermediary to implement the programme in various communities.  Its role is to contract Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) and to monitor the work of the NPOs in implementing the programme.

The NSS has placed a large number of people in work opportunities and has provided much needed income for individuals through socially constructive activities in their local communities. Beneficiaries have also received accredited training to provide them with skills required in the job market.

The conference will bring together different role players in the Non-State Sector including Programme Implementers (which are: the Department of Social Department, IDT, Department of Environmental Affairs, NEDLAC, National Treasury and department of Public Works),  Non-Profit Organisations contracted to NSS, beneficiaries, provincial staff implementing the NSS programme, service providers and community members.
