IDT connects the community of Silindini to the Thusong Service Centre and the rest of the world through a bridge

The IDT was appointed as the implementing agent for the construction of a single lane bridge over the Xuka River at Silindini Village in Engcobo local municipality in the Eastern Cape. The construction of the bridge is an intergration to the newly operationalised Thusong Service Centre built in the area which could not be accessed by the rest of the community due to a river that runs in the middle of the village. The construction process was preceded by the sod turning event attended by the Chief of the village, Lonmin Platinum Mine, the IDT (Eastern Cape regional Office) and the community.  Lonmin Platinum Mine is funding the bridge project for R9 million and they also funded the construction of the Thusong Service Centre to enable the community to access developmental information and services closer to where they live.

The village is in a very mountainous area and is difficult to access when using a car. The level of unemployment is very high and the popular mode of transport is horseback and donkey-drawn traditional carts.
