The education infrastructure is the IDT’s largest portfolio, largely constituted by new and replacement schools, as well as schools maintenance, renovations and upgrades. The education portfolio comprises of programmes from both the provincial Departments of Education (DOE) and the National Department of Basic Education (DBE). The schools infrastructure programme is the response to the National Development Plan’s (NDP) vision of delivering quality education through the provision of an appropriate and safe learning and teaching environment whilst solving unemployment and inequality problems. This programme entails the erection of new and/or renovations and upgrades of ECDC, libraries, computer centres, laboratories, ablution blocks, classrooms and other related facilities.
The DBE’s Accelerated School Infrastructure Development Initiative (ASIDI) programme consists mainly of the replacement of inappropriate structures (mud schools) and the provision of basic services such as, water and sanitation largely in rural schools.
