We are responsible for delivering social infrastructure and social development programme management services on behalf of government. The social infrastructure programmes we deliver include public schools, clinics, community centres, government offices and these are predominantly in rural communities in the nine provinces of South Africa.

The Department of Basic Education appointed the Independent Development Trust (IDT) to spearhead the construction of schools under the Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI). One of the schools that the IDT proudly completed and handed over to the Department of Basic Education was Heide Primary School which is about 15 km east of the judicial capital of South Africa, Bloemfontein. This initiative ensures that the access to basic education, as enshrined in the Constitution, is realised through the provision of appropriate school infrastructure for a safe learning and teaching environment. A state-of-the-art school in the middle of the deep rural areas of uMlalazi in northern KwaZulu-Natal has been built and completed by the Independent Development Trust (IDT) on behalf KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education. Welabasha Technical High School is part of the number of schools which were earmarked by the provincial government for upgrades and renovations in order to convert them into technical high schools with boarding facilities for the learners.  Read more…

As a development activist, Ray’s path crossed with that of the IDT in 2010 when the country was seized by the 2010 World Cup euphoria. The legendary jazz musician played a pivotal role in the implementation of the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP), particularly part of the programme that was to establish 42 Village Viewing Sites to enable rural communities to watch the matches live. As the Mpumalanga High Court nears completion, the Independent Development Trust (IDT) is proud to have created over 1100 job opportunities during the construction phase of the project and to have contributed to economy of the Enhlazeni District in that manner. Construction of the Booysens Magistrate’s Court is going ahead full steam and the structure is beginning to transform the skyline south of Johannesburg. The R242-million project is being implemented by the Independent Development Trust (IDT) for the Department of Justice and Correctional Services as part of the government’s mission to deliver access to justice to all South Africans. Read more…

The IDT is an organisation that has zero tolerance on corruption, and if any wrong doing is found on the part of the IDT, consequence management will follow on the errant individuals and corrective action will be taken. The Independent Development Trust (IDT) has noted with serious concern the recent media reports on some of the Heritage Projects the Organisation has been implementing on behalf of the Department of Arts and Culture. On 5 and 6 June 2017, the ENCA ran a story on the refurbishment and conversion of the house that Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela occupied when she was banished to Brandfort, Free State in the 1970s by the Apartheid regime, into a museum. The Plettenberg Magistrate’s Court project that is managed by the Independent Development Trust (IDT) is nearing completion and is set to boost the government’s mission to deliver access to justice to all South Africans. This was revealed to the Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Honourable John Jeffery when he made a stopover at the site on Monday to inspect progress on the construction of the new court premises.
