We are responsible for delivering social infrastructure and social development programme management services on behalf of government. The social infrastructure programmes we deliver include public schools, clinics, community centres, government offices and these are predominantly in rural communities in the nine provinces of South Africa.

The Independent Development Trust (IDT) has completed construction of six schools in the Eastern Cape and has already handed over the much needed premises to the communities, creating a conducive environment for teaching and learning. The IDT was appointed by the Department of Basic Education as an implementing agent for construction of these schools as part of the Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI) programme, which was initiated by the government in an effort to eradicate the backlog in school infrastructure across the country. The completed schools are Sulenkama Primary School and Gqukunqa Senior Primary School in Qumbu, Mqhakama Junior Secondary School in Libode, Tamsanqa Senior Primary School in Idutywa and Mpenduza Junior Secondary School and Ndotshanga Senior Primary School in Butterworth – all of which were constructed at a total cost of R165-million. Read more…

The Independent Development Trust (IDT) has completed construction of the car parking facility for the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane, a final phase in the construction of the court buildings for the Department of Justice. Construction of the three-floor facility – which lies adjacent to the main court building – commenced in March 2016 and is expected to be open for use by visitors to the already operational High Court premises in December 2018. The contractor is busy on site with the completion of final outstanding installations and thereafter commissioning of all installed equipment – including security access points, elevators, fire equipment, air conditioning systems – will take place, in time for the December practical completion deadline. A brand new health facility is set to open its doors to service the residents of Kagung, a dusty village on the outskirts of Kuruman in the Northern Cape Province. This is after the Independent Development Trust (IDT) has completed construction of the R25-million clinic and handed it over to the Northern Cape Provincial Department of Health in June 2018. The IDT, a premier implementing agency for government’s social infrastructure programmes, was appointed to manage the construction of the facility by the department in 2013, and processes including planning, social facilitation, bid adjudication and approvals commenced immediately thereafter and culminated in completion of the works as scheduled in 2018.

The Independent Development Trust (IDT) has completed the first phase of a Department of Public Works project to refurbish and restore its workshop facilities in the inner city of Tshwane, and thus helping the department to reach a significant milestone in the restoration of its buildings in the administrative capital. Since February 2018, the IDT has been working to prepare for the restoration of these historical workshop facilities on Minnaar Street to their heritage status. The IDT was appointed by the department to implement Phase 1 of the project, the scope of which include demolition of various buildings which had structural defects and civil works, including earthworks and access road between the heritage buildings to be restored. Read more…

The Booysens Magistrate’s Court project is 99% complete and is soon to be handed over to the client, the project management team informed the Department of Justice in August 2018. The Independent Development Trust (IDT) Programme Management Services team took the departmental delegation on tour of the premises also apprised the officials of the progress on site, saying work was progressing well to meet a handover deadline of September 2018. The project is being implemented by the IDT for the Department of Justice at a cost of over R240-million as part of a contract awarded to the IDT by the department to plan, design and construct new courts around South Africa. Read more…

The Independent Development Trust (IDT) is implementing a community health centre project that is aimed at enhancing the town’s residents to access quality healthcare, on behalf of the Northern Cape provincial department of health. Once completed the building will comprise of all primary health facilities including trauma unit, radiology, dispensary, psychiatric ward, maternity wards and paediatric wards while consultation rooms being constructed will be used for reproductive health services, psychologist, dietician and other services. The government’s efforts to fight substance abuse have received a major boost with the completion of a drug rehabilitation centre in Seshego, outside Polokwane in Limpopo. The Seshego Treatment Centre, which was constructed at a cost of R150-million, was handed over to the provincial department of social development by the Independent Development Trust (IDT), which was contracted by the department to complete the works on the project site. The centre, the first of its kind in Limpopo, is expected to commence intake of patients from all over the province and will be officially opened later this year. Read more…
